Children’s Yoga With Bonnie Russell

A space where children can develop a love of movement as they experience and get to know their growing and changing bodies.

In yoga we will bark like dogs in dog pose, try to balance on one trunk in tree pose and relax and float in cloud pose, go one many adventures, sing many songs and play lots of games.
If your child would like to gain flexibility, co-ordination, concentration, imagination, relaxation or just wants to have a bit of fun come join us in a yoga class. An added benefit is that they will gain coping skills that help with learning in class room situations.

What to Bring to Class

All mats and equipment are provided in the class. Children need only bring themselves and comfortable clothes that allow them to move freely. If your daughter is coming straight from school a pair of shorts for under her school dress is advised (just to stops any potential embarrassment).

It is best if Children either do not eat before class or if they do to have just a light snack something like fruit or some nuts for energy. We ask that you please do not feed your child anything with a lot of sugar before class as they find it to hard to concentrate and they don’t get the most out of their yoga class.

Contact and Emergency details will be collected before your child’s first class, please make sure you let the teacher know of any allergies, conditions or injuries you child has.

More About Bonnie

Photo 241.jpgBonnie Russell’s passion is Children’s Yoga some say this is because she is just a big kid herself all her classes have a natural child like energy about them. You will often find Bonnie rolling around or upside down along side her students. Bonnie Finds that Children have a love of learning and need to be constantly thrown new things to soak up, her classes contain yoga poses breathing exercises, games, concentration exersises, movement, dance, songs, relaxations, meditations, stories and even a bit of sign language.

Bonnie started off teaching Children’s yoga at the Alphington Community Centre in 2001 but has since branched out to primary schools all over Melbourne working with the after-school communities program. Bonnie has also taught in yoga schools, kindergartens, playgroups. and has taught caregivers how they might bring yoga into their care of children.
Through her work with children Bonnie has developed strong interest in children with disabilities and has worked with schools and day care centres to develop yoga programs for these groups. As well as catering to the needs of both physical disabilities and mental disabilities with in her normal yoga classes. Recently Bonnie has started volunteering her time with a playgroup for children with disabilities held at the Alphington Community Center and hopes to do even more of this work in the future.

Over the years of teaching Children’s yoga bonnie has had many yoga teachers ask for advice and inspiration on how to present childrens yoga to children especially as childrens yoga gains more popularity. To help with the ever growing amount of questions and need for good childrens yoga recources Bonnie entered into a partnership with Magic Yoga Mat in 2008. Magic yoga Mat is a childrens yoga company that aims at developing books, relaxations, songs and recources to support yoga teachers, parents and school teachers to help bring yoga into children’s every day lives.
