The Name Ball

June 16th, 2007

Can’t remember all the kids’ names in your class? Play a game that will help not only you remember their names but help them to remember each other’s names. It is important to introduce your children well and sometimes with children the difference between a friend and a stranger is knowing the other child’s name

You need: A ball

Instructions: All the children hop into a great big circle and sit down with their legs opened to the side feet touching (the side splits) the child next to them. At first children might complain that it hurts. Tell them only to take their feet as far out as they feel comfortable with but explain that if they don’t have their feet touching you will not be able to keep the ball in the circle. After a while (the minute the first ball is rolled) the children forget all about it the pain anyway as they get involved in the game. The ball is then rolled from one child to another the child rolling the ball calls out the name of the child they are rolling the ball

Helpful, maybe for the older ones you could introduce some breathing exercises, breath in as you recieve breath out as you give. Talk about how to recieve and how to give. Send a compliment with the ball and their name.

Yes, I guess you could actually send alot of things. Like thanks for something or love or good wishes. We did similar last night where the blew each other bubbles rather than rolling a ball.

Another nice way to introduce names is through breathing exercise. Breathing or singing names. Have all of the children breathe in together and then breathe out the name of a child holding on to certain sounds “eeeeeeee” “mmmmmmm” etc. Continue until you have completed every child’s name (don’t forget your own). The children love to hear there names sung by the entire class - check out the shy smiles on their face! I aminly do thid with 3-5 year olds, but it could be used for a variety of age groups.
