Cat Pose

June 10th, 2007

Basic: Cat pose is pretty straight forward. The kids get down on all fours hands with their hands under their shoulder and knees under the hips.

Moving: You can also create moving cats, where the kids get into cat pose and crawl around the room maybe meowing at all of the other cats. While the children are simply having fun crawling on their hands and knees pretending to be cats and kittens they are really working their left right brain co-ordination.

Sound: What is kid’s class with out a whole heap of sound? Get the kids while they are in cats pose to make as much sound as they can meow and purring and even hissing.

Angry / happy cat: When adults do cat pose they move their spines up and down first dipping through the back and looking up towards the ceiling and then rounding their backs and looking down towards their belly button. We call looking up towards the ceiling ‘happy cat’ and often do a little meow to go with the movement and then we look down to the belly button and this we call ‘angry cat’ and we add an angry cat hiss to go with it.

Other Cats: Maybe in your cat class you can look at other types of cat poses like lion and tiger.

Then they should silently relax sideways, as cats often do when basking in the sun, lying completely limp and still but listening to your voice. If a cat hears a meaningful noise, it will immediately spring onto its feet. […]
