Lion

Lion is a hard pose to teach to kids, in my experience they tend to think that the pose is all about who can roar the loudest!

Lion pose

At times can this be utterly deafening and in a class full of kids it also means that the kids are forgetting a few of the other important details to the pose like….

  • Sitting down on your heals
  • Knees spread wide toes together
  • Hands in between their knees
  • Their tongues poking out
  • Looking up to the space between their eye brows

Because of this tendency to focus on the roar, I don’t usually worry to much about the finer points of lion pose and concentrate mostly on the kids poking out of their tongue as long as they can when they roar. This helps my ears, helps them do less damage to their voice boxes and I find makes them sound more like a lion.
I don’t worry too much is their bottom lifts of their heals in excitement at the pose or if a hand leaves the floor to make a claw like
motion or even if the head gets tossed from side to side as the children imagine that they have a lions main.
Like warrior for most adults, lion pose for children helps to inspire confidence, excitement and lets the kids come out of their box a little and let out their big powerful voices!

Even with tongues poking out and roars down to a minimum I still cover my ears, playing up to the frightening nature of a class full of lions.
