Children’s Relaxation (The pond)

March 31st, 2007

This relaxation can be done with one child at home or a class full of kids.

You will need: At least as many rubber ducks as there are children in the
class.

What to say: Find a space on the floor in the yoga room and lie down in relaxation pose (cloud). We are going to try and be very very still for the next few minuites so find a position that’s nice and comfortable, one that you can stay nice still in for a little while.

Ether gently close your eyes or keep you eyes in your own space I want you to open up your imagination. Imagine that your body is a pond full of water. A very quite still calm pond of water. In fact the only part of your self that is moving are a few little ripples in your tummy as you take nice deep breaths in.

If you can lie still enough to make the water nice and calm you might find that a duck comes and lands on your pond. But be warned ducks only like still quiet water so if you move the duck will fly away and find a quieter stiller pond to rest on.

What to do: At this point the teacher Quietly moves around the room placing a rubber duck on each child’s tummy starting with the children that are lying the stillest. I often find when doing this relaxation that once a child has a duck resting on them they are tempted to wriggle and look at the duck, if a child does this feel free to take the duck off them and place it on another child. Wait for that kid to settle down again and place another duck on them it is important to make sure that after taking a duck off them that you put a new one back on.
I find that it will only ever happen once as a child tests what you said in the start of the relaxation. Putting a duck back on a child proves that the duck will in fact only land and stay on a child that is still and makes the taking away of a duck nothing personal against the child.
I do this relaxation with reasonable amount of personal judgment, determining ‘a still pond’ to be a child who is still and quiet compared to how that child usually is.
I also always make sure that all children have an even amount of ducks on them when the game finished as I find they usually get up and compare how many ducks each child ended up with.

That’s beautiful Bonnie, Any chance you can bring your family of ducks to the next childrens yoga meet? I think that all our participants young and old would enjoy learning this lesson . . . . .
