What is Reiki?
February 4th, 2007 Reiki is a form of holistic healin or energy balancing which belongs to the Easters system of traditional medicine. Put most simply, Reiki is two things:
• First, it is an energy, known in the East as Chi, Qi or Prana. This is best described as being the essence of life or universal energy.
• Second, it is the practice of transmitting this energy to oneself or others, through placing the hands in various, easily learnt, positions on the body, with the intention of restoring and maintaining balance and therefore health and wellbeing.
Reiki is derived from a combination of Tendai Buddhism, Taoist Qi Gong and Chinese medicine. While being influenced by ancient Asian spiritual philosophies, it is important to stress that Reiki is not a religion and is not connected to any organisations or group. As with many of the other forms of Qi Gong practice and martial arts, although they may be associated with Taoism or Buddhism, it is not necessary to believe in these philosophies in order for Reiki to work.
Reiki does however, have a very simple set of precepts known as the Reiki precepts, they are:
Don’t get angry today.
Don’t worry today.
Be greatful today.
Workhard today (meditate).
Be kind to others.
Where does Reiki come from?
Reiki originates from Japan where it was established as a form of holistic healing by a man called Mikao Usui early this century. It was brought to the West in 1937 by Hawaya Takata, a Japanese woman who lived in Hawaii. Most branches and schools of Reiki in the West have sprung from Takata’s teachings. While Usui Reiki spreads into the West, it still continues to be practiced in Japan and other Asian countries.
Two Key Rules of Reiki Practice:
1. Reiki must not be practiced on or practiced by anyone under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs.
2. Broken bones must be set by a medical professional before Reiki can be performed on the injury.
Reiki is a non-denominational practice and encompasses all beliefs.
